How to Build Your First Routine

Part of Daily Routines

Quick summary

Start with a few simple actions:

  • Ask yourself what you want to improve or explore
  • Choose one small action you can repeat daily
  • Attach it to a specific time or trigger
  • Keep it simple enough to maintain
  • Track your progress so you can see it grow

You don't need a perfect plan. Just start.

1. Ask yourself what you want

Before building a routine, decide what direction you want.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I want to improve right now?
  • What skill do I want to develop?
  • What opportunity do I want to explore?

Example:

You want to learn more about AI tools. Your routine direction becomes:

“Learn something about AI every day.”

2. Choose one small action

Pick one action that supports your goal.

Examples:

  • read one article
  • watch a short video
  • test a new tool
  • write down one idea

Example routine:

Spend 5 minutes exploring an AI tool.

3. Choose a trigger

Attach the routine to something that already happens.

Examples:

  • after waking up
  • after your morning coffee
  • after finishing work
  • before going to sleep

Example routine:

After my morning coffee, I explore one AI tool.

4. Keep it easy

Start with something small enough to repeat daily.

Example:

Instead of: Study AI for 1 hour

Start with: Learn about AI for 5 minutes.

Consistency matters more than intensity.

5. Track your routine

Tracking helps you stay consistent.

You can track routines using:

  • a notebook
  • a checklist
  • a calendar
  • a spreadsheet

Example:

Each day I mark a check when I complete my 5-minute AI learning routine.

Example daily routines

Midday5 minTry one new AI tool or feature
